Female to Male Top Procedure

Transgender mastectomy surgery is performed under general anaesthetic by our Plastic Surgeon.

During the procedure, incisions are made and the best tissue is carefully removed, together with any excess skin.

The remaining skin is then reshaped and tailored, to create a flatter, more masculine appearance. In some cases, the surgeon may also reposition or resize the nipples to achieve a more natural and proportionate outcome.

Our Plastic Surgeon will discuss the various surgical approaches for the procedure, and the choice of surgical approach in your particular case will depend on various factors such as your own anatomy, and your desired results from the surgery.

The most common techniques include double incision, peri-areolar, and keyhole procedures.

Double Incision option

In this particular technique the Plastic Surgeon will make horizontal incisions across the chest, usually below the pectoral muscles. The breast tissue is removed, and excess skin is excised. The remaining skin is then closed, resulting in a more defined masculine chest. This method could be the preferred option if you have large breasts or of you are wanting a significant reduction.

Peri-areolar option

The peri-areolar option involves making an incision around the areola, this is the dark pigmented area that surrounds your nipples. Through this incision, our Plastic surgeon will remove the breast tissue and excess skin. The remaining skin is then reshaped and closed, resulting in a smaller and flatter chest. This technique could be an option for you if you have a moderate breast size or if you are looking for a procedure with less scarring than the double incision option.

Keyhole

If you have minimal breast tissue, then a keyhole technique could be the right choice. It has the advantage that it is less invasive than other methods. Not everyone will be suitable for the keyhole technique of course, and you will discuss this at your consultation. The Plastic Surgeon makes small incisions around the areola and uses liposuction to remove the excess fat. The remaining breast tissue is then removed through these incisions. The keyhole technique is ideal for individuals with a smaller chest or those who desire minimal scarring and a quicker recovery.

Female to Male Top Recovery

You will be able to leave the hospital on the same day, so long as someone collects you from the hospital. You will need to plan some time off week, at least one week. Also important is to avoid heavy lifting, gym and any strenuous activity for at least six weeks. The Plastic Surgeon will also see you periodically to monitor your progress after the procedure.

Upon discharge from hospital, you will be given some pain relief medication and a course of antibiotics.

Expect to see some bruising and swelling appear on the chest, this is perfectly normal and will settle over time.

You will be given clear written instructions on what steps to take to ensure a trouble-free recovery. If you have any questions of course, our patient care team will only be a phone call away.

The Results

  • Flatter chest with good contour
  • An end to chest binding and the potential complications and hassle of this regime
