Are you noticing that your chest is starting to swell, such that you seem to be developing breasts ?

This is a classic sign of Gynaecomastia. Gynaecomastia is a condition where men develop excess breast tissue.

It affects men to varying degrees. For example, maybe you only notice that your nipples are a bit more puffy than usual. In worst cases there is clearly excess development of breast tissue that causes you acute embarrassment and prevents you from doing the things you love, such as swimming, gym, sport etc. It can even have an effect on your personal relationships.

What causes man boobs?

You may be wondering how suddenly you seem to be developing boobs. Sometimes the Doctor may refer you for blood tests , just to check your hormone levels. As men age there can be an imbalance ion hormones which could explain the development of man boobs. Most patients who have the tests will not have any imbalance in hormone levels.

If you are very overweight, or obese, this can cause man boobs. Excess fat can accumulate in the chest area giving the appearance of excessive beast tissue. In these situations you could try to lose some weight to see if this has any appreciable difference to the appearance. If it does not then surgery maybe the best option.

Other causes of man boobs include

  • Excessive amounts of alcohol
  • Recreational drugs and anabolic steroids
  • Kidney or liver disease
  • Testicular issues

Gynaecomastia treatment and surgery

Your General Practitioner will be able to help with this. Should you be advised to have hormone tests prior to any surgery, we will be able to arrange these for you

How is Gynaecomastia surgery performed?

The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic and takes around one hour. In most cases you will be able to go home on the same day, provided someone collects you from the hospital. The Surgery is performed by our Plastic Surgeon.

There are two approaches to this surgery, depending on the type of surgery that you need to fix the problem.

If you have excess fat in the chest area then liposuction maybe all that is required. In this case an instrument called a cannula is used to remove the excess fat. This cannula is attached to a suction machine that aspirates the fat. This is done in an even contoured way to help achieve good shape as well as removing the excess fat. This procedure takes around one hour and is performed under general anaesthetic. In most cases you will be able to go home on the same day. Make sure that you have someone to collect you from the hospital.

If the Plastic Surgeon has advised you that you have excess breast gland tissue then liposuction alone will not be enough. In this case in incision around the nipple is made and the excess breast tissue is removed.

If you have excess glandular tissue and excess fat , both procedures can be performed at the same time.
