Labia Fat Transfer

Over time the labia majora can lose volume, projection and elasticity. Many women are concerned about how their labia looks when this happens. This is because these changes can lead to excess skin in the area, with the labia seemingly to hang downwards.

There are a number for options to help improve the appearance of the labia including the injection of hyaluronic acid to temporarily improve the look. A more permanent solution however, is a labia fat transfer. Transferring fat from one part of the body to another is not new. More commonly, fat is transferred to the face and buttocks to restore youthfulness by creating more volume.

Our results speak for themselves

Labia Fat transfer: The procedure

Usually the procedure is performed under general anaesthetic and takes around one hour. This means that you will be asleep for the whole procedure and feel no pain. You will be able to go home on the same day as the procedure, proving someone comes to the hospital to collect you.

The procedure starts by the harvesting of fat from areas where you have good quality fat, typically from the abdomen and inner thighs. This fat is then purified to remove dead cells, oils and blood from the fat. The remaining fat cells are then injected into the labia to improve volume and shape.

Labia fat transfer: After the procedure

Following the procedure you should arrange to take a few days off work. If your job involves a lot of physical activity then you may need a little longer. You will be discharged from hospital with a course of antibiotics and some pain relief medication. You should wear loose fitting clothing in the first week or two to ensure maximum comfort after the procedure. Avoid gym sporting activities, cycling horse riding etc for one month after the procedure.

In the first two to three months you will notice that some of the fat will be naturally absorbed. This is perfectly normal and to be expected. During the procedure the Surgeon will have allowed for this absorption in the amount of fat that was transferred. Typically, 30 to 50 % of the fat will absorb. In rare cases less or more than this is possible, it varies somewhat between patients. Most patients however will absorb fat within the parameters mentioned. You will also need to avoid sexual activity for one month, or until the Surgeon tells you it is safe to do so.

Labia Fat transfer: Risks and complications

Most patients who choose to have labia fat transfer do so without any complications, Of course, all surgical procedures carry some element of risk and you should be aware of them. These include,

  • Infection
  • bleeding
  • hyper-absorption of fat
  • skin necrosis
  • asymmetry
  • risks associated with anaesthesia

The best quality fat for labia fat transfer is usually found on the abdomen and inner thighs. The fat is harvested from these with an instrument called a cannula.

What is the alternative to labia fat transfer ?

Hyaluronic acid fillers would be an alternative to using your own body fat. With hyaluronic acid fillers you will need to return to the clinic every 12 to 18 months for top ups. Top up treatments are needed because hyaluronic acid absorbs naturally in the body.

What kind of anaesthetic is used for labia fat transfer ?

Mostly we use a general anaesthetic. This means the procedure will be painless. It is a short anaesthetic as the procedure will take around one hour.

Does labia fat transfer need to be repeated ?

Allow one week off work afterwards. If your job involves heavy lifting then you may need a little longer. Most patients will return to work within one week.

Is labia fat transfer painful ?

The procedure itself is not painful because it is usually carried out under general anaesthetic. You may have some bruising and swelling on the belly and inner thighs where the fat was harvested from. This can take several weeks to settle completely. The labia will be sore at first and may look “ over corrected “ . This is because some of the fat  transferred will absorb over time. Most patients tolerate any discomfort well with pain relief medication given by the hospital upon discharge.
