Liposuction for men

Many men struggle to lose excess fat from various areas of the body. The most common areas that men struggle to lose fat are:

The Stomach

Excess fat on the stomach is a big problem for many men. When diet and exercise won’t shift this fat, liposuction can be a good solution to reduce belly fat and get back to a healthy and more flattering shape.

Neck, Chin & Jowls

Excess fat on the neck and chin area can make you look older than your years. Again, this can be a particularly stubborn area for excess fat to store.

Flanks (love handles)

This area is often treated at the same time as removal of excess fat on the belly.

Supra pubic fat

This is the area of excess fat below your belly and just above the genitals. Many men report that when they have excess fat on the pubic area, it makes their penis look smaller. This is because the excess fat pushes forward and encroaches over the penis shaft, hiding the true length of the penis.

Excess fat on the chest (man boobs)

Liposuction is often used to remove excess fat on the chest area. Fat in this area can be especially embarrassing for men. Many men with this problem don’t like activities such as swimming or going to the beach because they don’t want to take their top off. It can also affect personal relationships too. Sometimes a gynaecomastia procedure needs to be performed together with liposuction. Your Plastic Surgeon will advise you at your consultation if this is required.

Why have liposuction?

Of course, if you can lose this excess fat with diet and exercise then this is certainly a first option to try. Where diet and exercise haven’t worked, liposuction can be the answer to get rid of that fat once and for all. Other benefits of liposuction include:

  • A real confidence booster when you can look in the mirror and see the shape that you wanted.
  • Most men are motivated to kick-start a healthier lifestyle after liposuction by watching their diet and perhaps taking up some exercise.
  • Liposuction inspires some to take more interest in the way they look, perhaps even a new wardrobe after the procedure.
  • The results last when a healthier lifestyle is undertaken or maintained after the procedure.

How is Liposuction performed?

Liposuction is performed under general anaesthetic by our Plastic Surgeon. The length of the surgery depends on the number of areas to be treated, but most procedure take around one hour. Having the procedure under general anaesthetic means that there is no pain during the procedure. In most cases you can go home on the same day, so long as someone collects you from the hospital.

The procedure works by using an instrument called a cannula attached to a special suction machine. Fat is then removed in a controlled way to not only remove fat but also to contour the area to improve the shape.

Small puncture wounds are made in the skin through which the fat is removed.

More than one area of the body can be treated at the same time, subject to the amount of the fat that needs to be removed.

For example, your belly fat can be removed at the same time as excess fat on your flanks.

Vaser Liposuction: The Recovery

When you get home from the surgery it is important to arrange some time off work. Depending on the type of work that you do, and the extent of the surgery, you may need to allow one week off work to recover.

You will notice that the operated area will become bruised and swollen, this is perfectly normal and to be expected after liposuction. Upon discharge from hospital, you will be provided with pain relief medication to help in the first week or so after the surgery, and you will also have a course of antibiotics to take.

You will notice that the bruising and swelling will start to subside over the first one to three weeks. This varies from person to person of course.

After the surgery you will be given a special compression garment to wear over the operated area. This garment will feel quite tight, and you will wear it for around four to six weeks. This garment is very important because it helps the healing process and reduces post-operative swelling.

Expect some pain and discomfort in the first few weeks, this is usually well tolerated by most patients with the prescribed pain relief medication given upon discharge.

As part of your recovery process our Plastic Surgeon will monitor your recovery over the following weeks and months to ensure that everything is settling well.

You will also have access to our patient care team for ongoing advice and support.

What are the risks of liposuction?

Most men who undergo liposuction do so without any complications beyond the early recovery period. Of course, all surgical procedures carry some element of risk of complications, and you should be aware of them, however small the risk.

Risks with liposuction include.

  • Post-operative pain and discomfort (very common)
  • Uneven appearance after the fat removal
  • Numbness of the treated area

    Is Liposuction painful?

We perform liposuction under general anaesthetic, so you will not feel any pain. Post operatively you will be in some discomfort because of the bruising and swelling that happens following the surgery. Most Patients tolerate this well with the post op medication that you are given on discharge from the hospital.

How much time will I need off work after liposuction?

You should arrange between 7 and 10 days off work after liposuction, depending on the type of work that you do. If your job is fairly physical, you will need to allow for this in your plans.

Are the results instant after liposuction?

The cost of liposuction depends on the number of areas treated. When you have had the consultation with the Plastic Surgeon, we will be able to tell you the exact cost of the procedure and what the cost includes. Costs of liposuction also reflect the Plastic Surgeons experience and expertise. Also, other factors should also be taken into consideration when assessing the cost such as, are garments included after surgery, are post op consultations included, are revision surgery costs included if you need it?

    How much does liposuction cost?

Finance is available for the procedure, subject to status. Ask us for more information about finance and different ways to pay for your procedure.

    Are liposuction scars noticeable?

Most liposuction scars heal like a freckle on the skin. There are no large incisions for this surgery. The entry points to remove the fat are made with a special instrument called a cannula, it’s like a long thin needle.

    Is liposuction permanent?

Liposuction is considered a permanent procedure. It’s always a good idea to make sure that you follow a good healthy diet and exercise programme after liposuction. You should know that not all fat cells are removed from the body and if you eat excessively, it is possible to gain more fat on the body in other areas, although those that do so report that the extra fat is more evenly distributed around the body.

I have read that the treated area feels hard afterwards.

It is possible that the area may feel quite form afterwards. This can take three months to settle down. It shows that the area is healing and is a positive sign. Over time the area will soften and feel more normal.

Should I lose weight before getting liposuction?

Many patients have usually already tried to lose weight before considering liposuction. If you have done this, then it’s a good time to consider the procedure. If your shape is the best that you can get it, then this can be the best “canvas” for the Plastic Surgeon to work on. If you feel that you have further weight that you can lose, then it would be best to do this and then consider liposuction.

Can I have liposuction done again?

Yes, it is possible to have liposuction more than once, especially if you have other untreated areas that you would like to improve. You should wait at least six months from any previous liposuction though.

Why does pubic fat make my penis look smaller, and can liposuction help?

Many men complain about excess fat in the pubic area, it can be very difficult to shift. When this fat protrudes it can make the penis look buried, leading to so called “buried penis”. Removal of this excess fat will not only make the pubic area look better and feel more comfortable, but it will also reveal more of the penis at the same time.

    Can I finance liposuction?

It is possible to arrange finance for liposuction, subject to status. No deposit is required, and you can take several years to pay. All finance is tailored to the patients’ circumstances. Get in touch with us if you would like finance for liposuction.

How soon can I have sex after liposuction?

It may take a week or two before you feel comfortable engaging in sexual activity. Listen to your body and give yourself time to rest and recover first.
